Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS-funded support that supports you to live the life you want, in a home that is yours. If you want to live alone or with other people, be close to family, or have space for your pets or a veggie garden, we’ll help you find the home that’s right for you. It’s about having the right people by your side to make everyday life safe, supported and fun.

With Able Australia’s SIL services this could include support…

  • At home: cooking, cleaning and personal tasks.
  • Socialising: hanging out with friends, going to the movies and other places.
  • Doing ‘life’ admin: Filling in forms and getting to appointments
  • Out and about: catching public transport
  • And more…

You choose what your day looks like, so you always feels safe, confident and in control.

This is one of the most common questions we hear: What is the difference between SDA and SIL?

  • Supported Independent Living (SIL): Refers to the support and services you receive to live independently. These supports are flexible and not tied to a specific house.
  • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA): Refers to the home itself. SDA homes are built to meet strict design standards and provide accessibility, liveability, and safety for people with higher support needs.

Able Australia is both a registered SIL and SDA provider, so you can access supported living services and a home that’s right for you, all in one place.

Supported independent living is typically for adults with higher support needs, who need some level of support at home all the time. This includes overnight care in most cases and is commonly used in shared living situations.

It’s important to make sure you’re receiving the right level of support to live the life you choose.

If you think you may be eligible for Supported Independent Living services, the first step is to undergo an NDIS functional assessment. This determines what level and type of support you might need.

From there, Able Australia can make a support plan and a roster of care. Remember, SIL will cover personal care and support you get out and about. But it doesn’t cover basic costs of living, such as rent, utility bills and groceries. You are responsible for those costs.

SIL can help cover

SIL doesn’t cover

  • Personal care
  • Support for daily tasks such as cooking and cleaning
  • Assistance getting to appointments and taking any medication
  • Travel to get to your activities
  • Costs of groceries
  • Rent, board or lodging costs
  • Utilities (power bills, water bills, etc)
  • Any support not related to your disability

Able Australia is a registered SIL provider and we can guide you through the process of applying for funding. Give us a call and we’d love to talk to you!

You can also find more information on the NDIS website.

SIL includes support with daily tasks, like personal care, cleaning and cooking. The goal is for you to live as independently as possible, while building your skills.

There are other services you can access if you live alone or don’t require support every day.

Individualised Living Options (ILO) let you choose the home you live in and set up supports in the way that best suits you. It looks a little different for every person but can assist ou with in-home services as well as support outside the home for things like shopping and catching up with friends.
