Emily was a happy and bright baby. But when she was still not talking at 3 years old, a health assessment threw Mikki into a new world of medical costs and uncertainty.
Mikki said, “I was shocked to learn that Emily was born non-verbal and autistic, with ADHD, anxiety and Pica, which is compulsive eating of non-food items.”
As a single mum struggling with her own mental health, this was frightening and for Mikki. She didn’t know where to start or how to support Emily’s extra needs.
Good news: Emily now spends a night each week at Able’s Children’s Respite service.
Mikki shares, “At home, Emily loves drawing and colouring, curling up on the couch with me to watch her favourite movies, going to church with her Grandma Maria and fun visits from her dad. On her respite day she gets excited, she loves to go and has made friends there with another girl. Her independence and speech are growing. Respite has helped her come out of her shell!”
Our staff support her with communication through an iPad with programs that help her build confidence and connection. Her favourite activities are going to the park or zoo, listening to music, riding the tricycle, playing playdough and dolls.
Your donation will help us give new toys, games and fun activities to young people with disability like Emily.
Imagine walking out of your front door and not being able to see the footpath, or hear what’s happening on the street. Deafblindness is a combination of hearing & vision loss.
Your kindness will also reach adults in our deafblind community who often feel isolated at Christmas. With your support, they can find connection, confidence and joy!
With your generous donation, we train communication guides, so our deafblind community can join in all the Christmas fun and celebrations with family and friends.
