Mikki shares, “At home, Emily loves drawing and colouring, curling up on the couch with me to watch her favourite movies, going to church with her Grandma Maria and fun visits from her dad. On her respite day she gets excited, she loves to go and has made friends there with another girl. Her independence and speech are growing. Respite has helped her come out of her shell!”
Our staff support her with communication through an iPad with programs that help her build confidence and connection. Her favourite activities are going to the park or zoo, listening to music, riding the tricycle, playing playdough and dolls.
Imagine walking out of your front door and not being able to see the footpath, or hear what’s happening on the street. Deafblindness is a combination of hearing & vision loss.
Alex is deafblind. He lost his sight as a teenager and lives with significant hearing loss. “It was very difficult socially,” Alex recalls. “At that age, you don’t really understand what’s happening.
As his vision changed, so did his independence. Everyday moments, like walking into a room, finding friends or ordering food now take time, planning, and often assistance.
Able Australia’s Communication Guides help people who are deafblind follow what’s happening, take part in community life, and attend important appointments with confidence.
“Donating helps the deafblind community thrive,” says Alex. “It helps create more opportunities, more support and chances for people to get out of their houses and be part of life.”
