During Deafblind Awareness Week in June, we were excited to see Travel Without Limits share Chris O’Kane’s story from this year’s National Deafblind Camp.

Chris, 75, became the oldest person at Oasis Camp to ride the flying fox for the first time. But for Chris, camp is so much more than any one activity. It’s an opportunity to connect with other people who are deafblind, share experiences and be part of a community that understands.

Having attended camp for many years, Chris enjoys spending time with old friends, meeting new people and learning from others.

“I enjoy spending time with all the young people, as well as people my age. It’s the most fun I had in a long time,” Chris shared.

The National Deafblind Camp brings people together from across Australia to connect, build friendships, share knowledge and try new experiences. Whether it’s discussing assistive technology, catching up with friends, taking on a new challenge or heading to the disco, camp is about belonging and community.

Thank you to Travel Without Limits for sharing Chris’s story.

This life-changing camp was made possible by philanthropic support, including generous gifts from the Lionel & Yvonne Spencer Trust and the Olver-Carlyle Charitable Foundation.
