Leila lives with three other housemates at an Able supported home that she loves. She lives independently with the dedication of Able’s 24 hour support staff.
“It’s the best place I love the most, it’s my house, my home, my accommodation. I like all my housemates. I’m independent, I do my own washing, my own clothes, tidy my bedroom myself and independent shopping.”

Imagine walking out of your front door and not being able to see the footpath, or hear what’s happening on the street. Deafblindness is the combination of hearing and vision loss.
Able’s Centre of Excellence in Deafblindness undertakes research, partnering with universities and people with deafblindness, to look at best practice in working with people who are deafblind. This includes the use of tactile interaction and communication, seen here by Richard and Dr Meredith Prain, Able Australia’s National Head of Research.

This is Richard, an innovative and creative man who is deafblind. He selects materials with unusual textures that he likes and cuts them up into shapes for his art pieces. He enjoys running his hands over the different textures.
